In 2023 the Rateable Value of businesses in Bristol was **£550 million**.

In April 2026 this figure is **£693 million**.

This is an increase of **26%**

### **Rateable Value and Business Rates**

The "Rateable Value" is not the same as the "Business Rates" bill that businesses have to pay. A combination of multipliers and relief schemes will determine the actual bill that a business has to pay.

In this report I will show estimated business rates bills based on the "Standard" multiplier. It will not reflect the lower multipliers applicable to businesses that can use the "Retail, hospitality and leisure" multipliers. Also, this calculation will not take [relief schemes](https://www.gov.uk/business-rates-relief/supporting-small-business-relief?ref=bristol-uncovered.uk) into account. There is a special scheme for "[Pubs and Live Music Venues](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/pubs-and-live-music-venues-relief?ref=bristol-uncovered.uk)".

Ben Cheshire, the landlord of The Coronation was [in the news recently](https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/whats-on/insane-council-costs-one-bristols-10859560?ref=bristol-uncovered.uk) where he spoke about the Council Fee for running a community event rose from £50 to £500\. The increase in rateable values will make it even harder for community pubs to survive.

Ben is running a [community fundraiser](https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-fund-the-annual-kingston-road-community-street-party?ref=bristol-uncovered.uk) to help cover the costs of the event.

> Hello! We at The Coronation have been organising the annual Kingston road street party since 2022\. A completely free event with music and entertainment for the community of all ages to enjoy, attracting hundreds of people from all walks of life.

> We normally have a children's magic show at the start of the event, followed by music acts of a mix genres including two show of a full samba bands playing throughout the day. Finishing the evening with a silent disco.

> The Coronation in the past has always self funded the street party, but this year unfortunately Bristol city council have increased the fee to use the street. It has gone from £25 each year to over £500 of admin fees. This is before any money has been paid out to the artists who play or our terrific sound and staging technician.

> The current Labour government are also about to implement over a 100% increase in business rates and alongside other costs across the board, small independent local places like ours are struggling and need your support now more than ever.We cannot afford to fund the whole event any longer, this is why we are asking support from the public to help fund this free community event. So we can make sure every artist is paid for there performance and all the public can have a bloody good time enjoying themselves all day.

> We appreciate [any donation you can spare](https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-fund-the-annual-kingston-road-community-street-party?ref=bristol-uncovered.uk), big or small to help make this free community event come to life. Thank you. The Coronation
