There are positive and negative impacts of more students in Bristol. They spend a lot of money in pubs and clubs, but also use services without paying council tax and are likely to contribute to flytipping.

Jan 2025 - Student numbers leave city 'missing millions' in tax

Growing numbers of students living in Bristol means public services are "missing out" on millions in council tax, a city council meeting was told.
The authority is "missing" £2.6m in tax this year, councillors told the meeting. Students are exempt from paying council tax despite benefiting from council services, like bin collections and parks.
Councillor Caroline Gooch said university cities were "over-burdened" with student exemptions compared to non-university or rural areas, arguing the government should implement a subsidy scheme.
Councillors also noted how students benefitted the city, such as the night-time economy.

Student Numbers

In July 2024 Bristol University had 30,660 Students, of whom 10,765 (35%) were International Students.

This is more than the population of Southville (12,882) and Bedminster (12,916) Wards combined.

"Full Time Home Students" paid £172 million in tuition fees and "Full Time International Students" paid £237 million. You can see why Bristol University is working to increase the numbers of International Students because even though they make up 30% of the student numbers they bring in 58% of Tuition Fee Income.

Broken white bookcase dumped on the pavement near to one of the “Student only” temporary communal bins on Little Paul Street. Every summer term it’s the same, despite every effort being made to make it easy for departing students.
